We all want healthy and shiny hair, but are we doing all things needed in order to have healthy and shiny hair? In the past years, the only hair routine I was following was: wash, condition, comb and blow dry.
I didn't even use styling products or heat protection products to reduce heat damage on my hair. Nowadays, I try to take care of my hair as much as possible. If you love having long, healthy, non-greasy, non-dull hair, you must avoid these mistakes we all do occasionally.
1) We wash our hair daily: if you wash your hair every day, you are helping your scalp to produce more oils and making it more greasy. Wash your hair every two days if you have an oily scalp or every three days if you have a dry scalp.
2) We do not wash our hair correctly: there is a correct way to wash our hair; moisten your hair well, rub the shampoo between your palms and begin to spread from the top of the head to the tips. Then with your fingers gently massage for a minute or two around the head. Rinse well and wrap them in a towel to absorb the water. Be sure to use the right products for your hair type.
3) We do not use the right shampoo: selecting the right shampoo for you depends on many factors like your hair type, the needs of your hair, pregnancy, age, seasons, whether you are exposed in the sun daily etc.
4) Not protecting our hair from the sun: Hair also needs attention when exposed in the sun. Apply sun protection to your hair in the form of a spray or cream and also, after sun exposure, wash with the suitable shampoo and use a moisturising mask to restore any damage caused.
5) Applying the conditioner from the root along the hair: The conditioner softens the hair ends only, in the remaining hair it is best to use masks. If you apply the conditioner to the top of the scalp, because you believe that you will get better results, you are wrong. The conditioner in the roots will block the pores, creating a film of product residues, which will make your hair greasy and sticky.
6) We rub the hair with the towel after wash: rubbing wet hair will cause extra damage because hair is weak when wet and rubbing roughens up the cuticle leading to breakage. It is best to use a cotton towel of even a t-shirt to absorb the extra moisture.
7) We don't use heat protectants when using heat tools: use creams, sprays or serums before blow drying them to make sure that little damage is done and your hair will remain healthy.
What tips do you have for maintaining your hair?

Great tips! I guess another advice will be if somebody has dandruff pay attention to it, because some people just ignore it

Thanks :)
DeleteI'm trying my best to be better at hair care routine. As you said all I used to do are just basic things like wash and condtion, but now I am focusing more on other "not so important" things.
ReplyDeleteOne of the tips I'd give to everyone is to use cotton T-shirt instead of towel. This applies especially to people with frizzy hair! Also, I now much rather prefer the reverse washing when you put conditioner first and then shampoo :) x
I haven't tried reverse washing before and I am too skeptical about it, because I have thick and frizzy hair I need a lot of conditioner at the end. I may try it though, thanks :)
Deletegreat tips here! I have such oily hair and sometimes it becomes unbearable if I don't wash it straight away - however I do try to use dry shampoo instead haha!

Oil is good for hair but I agree, when it is unbearable I must wash it immediately! Thanks!
DeleteGreat tips! I sometimes forget the damage of sun exposure and I neglect it but it's so important to keep it in mind like you said :D

Use sun protection for hair or a hat!
DeleteI always like to use a hair protection spray for the sun, as it can be so damaging! xx

Yes, it is so damaging for our hair and skin! :)
DeleteI recently started concentrating on 1 & 2 and wow what a difference it has made to my hair! Using far less shampoo has been a major factor.

DeleteMy hair is bleached and I use heat on it, though I try to limit that to two to three times a week. These are some good tips, thanks for sharing! x

I use a lot of heat tools too, make sure you use heat protection products before using heat :)
DeleteThis is such a great post, even though I do follow most of these, I think a lot of people are not aware how much damage they're doing to their hair every day... Thanks for sharing x

DeleteI wash my hair everyday because I cook almost everyday and I can't stand the smell of food in my hair. I have tried using dry shampoo to avoid hair washing but can't stand the feel of it in my hair. :-(

I used to do that 2-3 years ago, especially in the summer when the heat was unbearable, I used to wash my hair everyday, sometimes twice a day. I know what you mean, I cannot stand any smell on my hair, especially when I go out and my hair stinks cigarettes (yes, we are allowed to smoke on public places here).. Thank you Shireen!
DeleteThank you :)
ReplyDeleteI do most of these stuff and I know how unhealthy hair might get because of them. I used to wash my hair daily as I have really oily hair, however now I wash it every other day which is better than everyday :) I used to brush my hair when it is wet, now I try not to do it. It damages the hair.

I never wash my hair daily, I wash it every 3 days. If I wash it frequently my hair is horrible!! Xx

I admit, I'm useless when it comes to hair care. The thing that made the biggest difference for me was going two years without dyeing it. It was so much softer, stronger and healthier! I'm also obsessed with hair oils for hydration :)

Such a nice tips for hair... I always forget about the sun exposure. I really need to work on that :)

I no longer dry my hair with a blow dryer, I let it air dry and my hair is so much healthier. Applying conditioner at the roots is also an important one. Thanks for the tips!

This was a great informative post! Admittedly I am very lazy when it comes to haircare. Your post has inspired me to look after it a lot more. Great post!
